Arrival to the point of no return

17.05.22

I was offered the last place onboard the expedition ship ms Freya. I did not hesitate. The aim was to spend close to two weeks in the archipelago of Svalbard searching for polarbears and other wildlife. Photographer Erik Malm together with filmmaker Tony Myer are working on Eriks project “Dedicated Life” and they have invited a number of soulmates for this photographic journey.

In Longyearbyen not only can you find norwegians all dressed up on the national holidat suttonde maj (17/5) but also interesting wildlife/birds in the harbour.

Finally out at Sea

18.05.22

Ms Freya headed south towards Hornsund from Longyearbyen.Early rise and lookout for polarbears.

Great weather and magnificent scenery.  After touring with Ms Freja och couple of hours, the zodiacs were launched. Abt 7 persons per boat and excellent scenery. No polarbears but birds and great experience in fantastic weather.

In the evening four of the Spanish guys and I spent time in the sauna and the hottub up on deck. Polar öl.

We stayed the night in the ice.

First Polarbear

19.05.22

Wakeupcall 04.30 Polarbear. Everybody up quietly on deck.About 2.500 m away there it was. My first polarbear! It was walking steadily on the ice flakes towards us. I got the gear ready with my new 600 mm f4 II mounted on the tripod All the suddenly it changed direction and on abt 1,5 km it started walking alongside the ship. I started filming it just when the ice broke under it and it  got a ofrivillig swim tour. The bear kept walking until it layer down and slept on the ice. It moved a few time but never came closer. I got good pictures with the drone.

In the afternoon we leave the fjord to go north. On the way we visit the polish polar station Hornsund. I heared that there could be artic foxes there so again I took all my equipment along.
